INTRODUCTION:
You have been hired to create an anti-drug campaign. Your group members will be responsible for creating a “Drugonym”. Your group will select a second drug to investigate from our list of “Drugs to be covered” and become experts on. With this expertise, the group will create an acronym. An acronym is defined as, “A word or phrase formed from the initial letters of a name or in this case drug. Your drugonym should describe the information gathered through your research. Remember you have been selected because of your ability to relate to the targeted audience – pre-teenagers. You must present the information in such a way to convince pre-teens of all the dangers drug use offers.
TASK:
The class will split into groups of five. Each group will research a drug. Your group is to become extremely knowledgeable about this drug.
Your objectives are:
research and present factual information on assigned drug.
work as a team to convey the information.
Your group will:
create a “drugonym” (using the second drug assigned).
Drugs to be covered:
Alcohol
Tobacco
Marijuana MDMA (Ecstasy)
Cocaine Inhalants
Heroin LSD
Steriods (anabolic) PCP
PROCESS
1. Each group will be assigned a drug.
2. Each group will conduct research on the drug assigned. Notes will be kept in response to the following questions:
1) What is it?
2) What is the category of drug?
3) What are the common street/slang names?
4) What does it look like?
5) How is it used?
6) What are the common side effects?
7) What are the symptoms of overdose?
8) Is this drug addictive?
9) What are the withdrawal symptoms?
10) What are the short-term effects?
11) What are the long-term effects?
12) What is the federal classification?
13) List at least 5 myths and 5 facts about the drug.
3. While conducting research, find at least three other facts, which your group believes, is important information for a teenager to understand about the drug.
4. Read the classroom phamplets on the drug assigned to be used as resources while designing the drugonym.
“DRUGONYM”
Using the drug assigned, develop an acronym. Each letter in the drug name will begin a sentence or a paragraph that fully describes that drug name.
The “drugonym” should include:
1. Forms, category, and how taken
2. Street or common names
3. Common side effects
4. Short term effects
5. Long term effects
Brochure
Step 1: Each student will be assigned to a group that will research one of the drugs including: alcohol, ecstasy, marijuana, tobacco, or inhalants.
Step 2: Through exploring the provided links the groups will be responsible for completing the Group Guide Worksheet. Each student will be responsible for handing in their own sheet on the day they present their Brochure.
Step 3: Each group will design one Brochure to present to the class. Your Brochure will provide the following information about your assigned drug:
a) all the elements on the Group Guide Worksheet
Worksheets
b) a picture or drawing of your assigned drug
c) any other interesting facts that your group discovered.
Step 4: The construction of your Brochure should follow these guidelines:
a) Tri- fold printed on both sides should be used
b) marker or colored pencils should be used
c) be creative- use lots of color and different ideas. You may use a variety of materials on your Brochure.
Step 5: Each group will be responsible for presenting their Brochure to the class. Each group member must present at least one portion of the Brochure. The students should explain what they learned and also make reference to the Brochure they've created. It is important that the group thoroughly presents their topic! You are the teacher for this portion! print a copy for each class member.
PowerPoint
Step 1: Each student will be assigned to a group that will research one of the drugs including: alcohol, ecstasy, marijuana, tobacco, or inhalants.
Step 2: Through exploring the provided links the groups will be responsible for completing the Group Guide Worksheet. Each student will be responsible for handing in their own sheet on the day they present their PowerPoint!
Step 3: Each group will design one poster to present to the class. Your PowerPoint will provide the following information about your assigned drug:
a) all the elements on the Group Guide Worksheet
Worksheets
b) a picture or drawing of your assigned drug
c) any other interesting facts that your group discovered.
Step 4: The construction of your PowerPoint should follow these guidelines:
a) PowerPoint saved with the ending ppt. NO X or use Google
b)Each slide should have clip art and facts must use between 6-8 slides.
c) be creative- use lots of color and different ideas. You may use a variety of materials.
Step 5: Each group will be responsible for presenting their PowerPoint to the class. Each group member must present at least two portions of the PowerPoint. The students should explain what they learned and also make reference to the PowerPoint they've created. It is important that the group thoroughly presents their topic! You are the teacher for this portion!
Poster
Step 1: Each student will be assigned to a group that will research one of the drugs including: alcohol, ecstasy, marijuana, tobacco, or inhalants.
Step 2: Through exploring the provided links the groups will be responsible for completing the Group Guide Worksheet. Each student will be responsible for handing in their own sheet on the day they present their posters!
Step 3: Each group will design one poster to present to the class. Your poster will provide the following information about your assigned drug:
a) all the elements on the Group Guide Worksheet
Worksheets
b) a picture or drawing of your assigned drug
c) any other interesting facts that your group discovered.
Step 4: The construction of your poster should follow these guidelines:
a) poster board should be used
b) marker or colored pencils should be used
c) be creative- use lots of color and different ideas. You may use a variety of materials on your posterboard.
Step 5: Each group will be responsible for presenting their posters to the class. Each group member must present at least one portion of the poster. The students should explain what they learned and also make reference to the posters they've created. It is important that the group thoroughly presents their topic! You are the teacher for this portion!

This project will be worth 100 points. Each member of the group will receive the same grade. Grading will be as follows:

Conclusion:
Through this web-quest you and your group members should have a better understanding of the dangers that drugs can cause not only to pre-teenagers but any age. During the course of this web-quest, have you learned some new and interesting facts about drugs that you did not know before? Do you feel that by working through this project you have a more healthy perspective on drug use? Do you think that others may also?
